The Wildcat Way Contest

El Dorado High School’s “The Wildcat Way” Creative Expression contest is a chance for 9th - 12th-grade students to share their individual artistic and literary talent with the EHS community. 

The theme is open, allowing students the opportunity to express themselves creatively.

A virtual exhibition of student work will be held in May for the school and community viewing.

Submission entry deadline is Thursday, May 12th at 3pm.

Categories

3D Art

Category Description

  • Three-dimensional art objects created by carving, casting, or other shaping techniques that can have interactive qualities.

  • Examples (including but not limited to): Modeled, carved, cast, constructed, or assembled objects. Materials may include but are not limited to clay, cardboard, metal, acrylic, wood, glass, stone, marble, textiles, plastics, and found objects.

Submissions

  • A 360-video of the submission needs to be uploaded digitally via the online link.

  • The video must be in one of the following formats: .mp4, .mov, or .wmv. 

  • Submissions should be no more than 1GB in size.

  • The original work must also be submitted before the deadline. 

Limit: 1 sculpture


Dramatic Script

Category Description

  • Work that uses dialogue, action, and stage direction to tell a story, including scripts for television, film, or stage.

Submission: 

  • Each submission should be neatly written or typed with a font that is easy-to-read. Any writing (handwritten or typed) that is illegible will be removed from the competition. 

  • All entries must be submitted digitally in a PDF format. 

  • If a piece is handwritten, it should be scanned into a PDF to submit.

  • Excerpts can be submitted but should be clearly labeled as excerpts.

Limits: 500–3,000 words. 

If the script exceeds 3,000 words, provide a 250-word summary and attach a PDF of the excerpt you are submitting.


Monologue

Category Description

  • A dramatic monologue is any “speech” of some duration addressed by a character to a second character or characters.

  • Monologues can be original or selected from another piece of work.

Submission: 

  • Submissions must be recorded.

  • The video must be in one of the following formats: .mp4, .mov, or .wmv. 

  • Submissions must be uploaded digitally via the online link. 

  • Submissions should be no more than 1GB in size.

Limits: No more than 2 minutes


Original Composition

Category Description

  • An original piece, with or without lyrics, that is comprised of at least one instrument 

Submission: 

  • Submissions must be recorded.

  • The video must be in one of the following formats: .mp3 or .wav. 

  • Submissions must be uploaded digitally via the online link. 

  • Submissions should be no more than 1GB in size.

Limits: No more than 3 minutes


Painting & Drawing

Category Description

  • Art created by applying pigment to a two-dimensional surface.

  • Examples (including but not limited to): Oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, tempera, ink, encaustic, fresco, spray paint, etc. applied on canvas, canvas board, paper, or any flat surface.

  • Art that is composed of marks made with a manual or mechanical instrument on a two-dimensional surface. Drawings include all renderings made by an instrument on a surface and may include formal, realistic, and/or abstract imagery. Illustrations are works that graphically depict a concept or subject. Either drawings or drawn illustrations may be submitted to this category.

  • Examples (including but not limited to): Pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel, crayon, scratchboard, marker, etc.

Submission:

  • A clear photo of the submission needs to be uploaded digitally via the online link. 

  • Submissions should be no more than 500MB in size.

  • The original work must also be submitted before the deadline.

Limit: 1 painting and/or drawing


Personal Essay & Memoir

Category Description

A non-fiction work based on opinion, experience, and/or emotion that explores a topic or event of importance to the author.

Submission: 

  • Each submission should be neatly written or typed with a font that is easy-to-read. Any writing (handwritten or typed) that is illegible will be removed from the competition. 

  • All entries must be submitted digitally in a PDF format. 

  • If a piece is handwritten, it should be scanned into a PDF to submit.

Limit: 500-3,000 words


Photography 

Category Description

  • Images are captured by either an analog or digital camera.

  • Black and white photographs, color photographs, digital or analog photographs, photograms, other experimental photography, etc.

  • Editing software (Adobe Photoshop, etc.) is acceptable to use for minor touch-ups and image correction in a manner that replicates traditional darkroom techniques (cropping, dodging, burning, adjusting brightness, contrast, color balance, etc.).

  • Works that are digitally collaged, cloned, layered, merged, distorted, or heavily manipulated with computer software will not be accepted.

Submission:

  • Each work submitted to the photography category should be a distinct image that presents a unique artistic vision.  

  • Submissions must be uploaded digitally via the online link. 

  • Submissions should be no more than 500MB in size.

Limit: 1 image per category (black & white / color)


Poetry

Category Description

Writing in verse. May include but is not limited to prose poetry, free verse, formal poetry, song lyrics, and spoken word.

Submission:

  • Each submission may consist of 1–5 poems, which will be judged as a collection. 

  • Each submission should be neatly written or typed with a font that is easy-to-read. Any writing (handwritten or typed) that is illegible will be removed from the competition. 

  • All entries must be submitted digitally in a PDF format. 

  • If a piece is handwritten, it should be scanned into a PDF to submit.

Limit: 20-200 lines (total for the entire collection)


Recorded Performance

Category Description

  • An original performance by the student that displays their creativity and showcases their best talent

  • Cover songs are accepted in this category.  

  • Examples (including but not limited to): singing, playing an instrument, dancing, spoken word, etc.

Submission:

  • Submissions must be recorded.

  • The video must be in one of the following formats: .mp4, .mov, or .wmv. 

  • Submissions must be uploaded digitally via the online link. 

  • Submissions should be no more than 1GB in size.

Limit: No more than 2 minutes



Copyright and Plagiarism Policy

All work entered into the competition must be original, meaning you create the work based on your own ideas. By entering work into the competition, you agree that you created it and did not copy it from any other person, business, school, or organization. Any work that infringes anyone’s intellectual property rights will be disqualified. In addition, works copied from published photographs, the internet, or existing works should not be submitted and will be disqualified.**

What does original work mean? 

An original work is one that is new and different from what others have created. This means that you are the author of the work, and the work is not copied from someone else’s original work. 

What is copyright? 

Copyright is a form of legal protection prohibiting others from copying one’s creative work without permission. A copyright is a property right. Copyright law grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights for its use and distribution. 

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is an ethical violation resulting from failure to cite sources and engaging in the act of passing someone else’s work or ideas off as one’s own. This applies even if you have only copied a part, rather than the whole, of another’s work.

**The Monologue Category can include a reading of work written by another artist. The submission will be judged on the interpretation of the piece, stage presence, delivery, preparation, etc.

**The Recorded Performance can include the performance of works by other artists. The submission will be judged on the preparation, delivery, stage presence, enthusiasm, etc.
