The goal of the Art Department at Yocum is to foster creativity, while emphasizing conservation and cooperation. In-class teaching focuses on instructing basic techniques for a variety of art mediums; this is done to allow students the latitude to pursue any form of art that they find the most interesting. Assignments further the teaching by allowing students to experiment with a variety of tools and methods, with the “final” project being a cooperative art piece designed and completed by groups of students. Finally, all of this is accomplished with conservation in mind, both by using resources wisely and by learning to use mistakes rather than giving up.
