This school year, we are focusing on three powerful words that can make a big difference in how our students approach learning:

Mindset. Mastery. Momentum.

To help our students remember these words, we’re using something they see and use every day—a pencil! Our 3-Word Pencil Promise gives students a simple action and phrase to connect with each part of our motto.

Eraser = MINDSET

Tap the eraser and say, “I can try.”

The eraser reminds us that it’s okay to make mistakes! Learning doesn’t mean getting everything right the first time. A positive mindset means being willing to try, learn from mistakes, and try again.

Tip = MASTERY

Point to the tip and say, “I can practice.”

The tip of the pencil reminds us that getting better takes practice. We build mastery one step at a time by practicing, asking questions, learning from feedback, and continuing to grow.

Move It Forward = MOMENTUM

Slide the pencil forward and say, “I can keep going.”

Moving the pencil forward reminds us to keep moving forward, too! Even when something is challenging, we can use what we’ve learned, keep working, and make progress.

Our goal is for these three little phrases to become a big part of how our students think about learning:
