student watches as her keychain is melted down during a maker space activity

Students at Yocum Primary recently welcomed the North Little Rock Public Library’s Mobile Makerspace for a hands-on STEAM learning experience.

The Mobile Makerspace program brings science, technology, engineering, art and math activities to communities across Arkansas. Yocum Primary Librarian Mia White learned about the program during a library meeting in August and began working to bring the experience to Yocum students.

To help cover the cost of the visit, White applied for funding through the Simmons First Foundation, which provides financial assistance to Title I schools and schools in need.

During the visit, students created Shrinky Dink keychains by selecting and coloring their own designs. Mobile Makerspace librarians Aaron and Karter explained the process behind the activity, and students watched as their creations shrank in an oven before becoming finished keychains.

The visit gave students an opportunity to combine creativity with hands-on STEAM learning while experiencing something new outside of their regular classroom activities.

Yocum Primary appreciates White, the Mobile Makerspace team and the Simmons First Foundation for helping make the experience possible for students.
