Fourth Grade

Hour of Code

This week, Northwest Elementary is participating in Hour of Code.  Hour of Code is part of the global celebration of Computer Science Education Week.  It is an introduction to coding that shows students that anyone can learn the basics of coding.

Second Grade has been studying habitats.  This week, we are reading the story, Gingerbread Mouse, which takes place in the forest habitat.  The students sequence the story and observe the response of the mouse.  Then, they make a path that sequences the story and color codes the mouse’s response to changes in its environment.  Finally, they run an Ozobot through their course.

Third Grade has been studying animal life cycles.  This week, the students are coding an Ozobot through the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle.  They sequence the stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.  Then, they color code the Ozobot to behave like the butterfly in each stage.

Fourth Grade has been studying animal structures and survival.  This week, the students are reading about the structures and adaptations of an octopus and coding an Ozobot to act them out.  They color code each structure or adaptation, such as: inking, jet propulsion, squeezing in small places, and camouflage.  Then they run the Ozobot through the course and it responds to the codes students colored.
