Hour of Code

Northwest students participated in an hour of code during the week of December 7-11.

The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. Computer Science Education Week is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906).

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Kindergarten and first students used coding mice to code the sequence of different stories.

Second grade students used iPads using Block code to Maneuver Santa to different locations.

Third and fourth students used Chrome-books to use Block code to program drones and a high-tech sleigh helping the Grinch to capture presents and navigate down the mountain to Whoville.

Also, all students used Ozobots to code the life cycle of living things!

Be sure to ask your student what their favorite activity was during the Hour of Code.
