JANUARY board recognition

Congratulations to the El Dorado School District Honorees of the Month from Barton Junior High School.

Student of the Month: Wyatt Wilson

Wyatt is a 7th-grade student and is the son of Emily and Ricky Wilson. When asked what his favorite subject is, Wyatt said that he enjoys his Geography class. He said that the things that he is studying in that class make him want to visit some of the areas that he is learning about.

Barton’s librarian, Carson Keith stated “He is a super hard worker in and out of the classroom. He is always striving to do his best in every class even if it is not his favorite subject. He is also one of the top AR readers this year because he wanted to be at the top of the list. Last year he did not make it on the list one time but he set his mind to it this year and accomplished his goal.  He is an extraordinary young man.”

His principal Mark Smith stated- “Wyatt is a quiet young man. He shows kindness to others on campus. He maintains a focus on school earning all A’s and B’s for the 1st semester. The staff at Barton is proud of the young man that he is and look forward to seeing him continue to grow and accomplish amazing things.”

Classified Employee of the Month: Geneva Daniels

Mrs. Daniels has served as the cafeteria manager at Barton for 13 years. She has worked for the El Dorado School District for 25 years, having worked at Murmil and Hugh Goodwin prior to coming to Barton.

Several teachers nominated Mrs. Daniels for this honor stating- “Mrs. Daniels wears a smile and is always encouraging. She works hard to ensure that the logistics of her job are carried out. She is truly respected among many.”

Her principal Mark Smith stated- “Mrs. Daniels works hard to make sure that the students and staff are well taken care of. She guides her team as they cook and serve good food, providing a variety of choices. When she sees a student in need, she never turns the student away, always making sure that the student is well taken care of. It is an honor to work with her.”

Teacher of the Month: Misty Freeman

Ms. Freeman has taught 7th grade English and Language Arts at Barton for three years and has worked as a substitute for seven years in another district. She received her Bachelor of Science in Teaching and Learning at the University of Arkansas Monticello and recently obtained her Master of Arts in Teaching at the University of Arkansas Monticello while teaching and raising three boys.

A coworker stated- “Misty Freeman is a great candidate for teacher of the month. Although she is a newer teacher and is only completing her third year, she exemplifies many qualities of a model teacher. She works to find updated and exciting material to share with her students. She takes time to have students reflect on their assessments by having them see what they missed and what answers should/should not be as well as how they can improve on future work. Last year, Ms. Freeman began creating daily slides/announcement pages for her classes and improved on it this year, serving as an example for other teachers to use. She uses a variety of teaching materials and methods to help engage students and eagerly shares new materials and ideas. She recently attended an RTI training with coworkers and upon returning, she immediately shared information and resources she gathered at the conference to help her team understand more about their work as a collaborative team. Ms. Freeman understands that a student simply not turning in work is not indicative of their academic ability and strives to get work from students when at all possible. “

Her principal Mark Smith stated- “Ms. Freeman is an excellent teacher. If I have a new teacher that needs to observe a class to learn the art of teaching, Ms. Freeman’s class would be at the top of the list. She works hard for her students and helps to make her teacher team one of the best. She is also one of the most humble people that I know. When I told her that her peers selected her to be the teacher of the month, she seemed surprised. She would say that there are so many teachers that are deserving of the honor. And though I agree that Barton is blessed with great teachers, I know that Ms. Freeman is one of the best.”
