Washington Middle School student Ezra Goldemberg recently transformed his idea into tangible service. In response to the hardships families are facing during the recent federal shutdown and resulting interruptions to the SNAP program, Ezra proposed using funds from the school’s Snack-a-Thon to purchase food for those impacted.

After presenting his idea to administrators, $200 from Snack-a-Thon proceeds was designated for the project, and Ezra’s family contributed an additional $100. With these funds, Ezra purchased groceries to support families in need and strengthen the school’s food backpack program.

Principal Bethanie Hale remarked, “When Ezra suggested using Snack-a-Thon funds to support families affected by the shutdown, it reminded me exactly why we do what we do. His idea represents the leadership and empathy we strive to cultivate in our Knights: noticing the needs of others and taking purposeful action to help. That is what being a Knight means: leading with heart, compassion, and conviction.”

Currently, the backpack program provides weekly support to three students, with plans underway to expand assistance as SNAP-related disruptions continue to affect households in the community.

Ezra’s initiative exemplifies the good that can spring from thoughtful, student-driven action. His dedication reflects not only kindness but the maturity and civic spirit that help shape thriving communities.
