BARTON BAKES
Barton Bakes is a hands-on class where students will learn to create, decorate, and enjoy delicious baked foods! Throughout the year, students work in groups to learn how to make cookies, muffins, cakes, cupcakes, pies, homemade bread, and more! Students learn life skills that help them prepare for life after high school, including knowing the basics of baking/cooking! At the end of the year, there is a fun contest for all students to showcase their work. Advisor Mrs. Davis says, “We have a baking competition at the end of the year where teams make layer cakes and compete for the title, "Barton Bakes Spring Baking Champion!”

EHS CLOSE UP
Founded in 1971, the Close Up Foundation has provided students with an opportunity to experience their government, firsthand, by taking part in a "living classroom" atmosphere in the nation's capitol, Washington, DC. Working with other students from across the nation, students interact in workshops, debates, mock Congresses, and tour the most famous monuments, museums, and governmental institutions in the Washington, DC, area as they understand and comprehend the inner workings of our government. Close Up professionals lead and instruct them in over 70 hours of personal instruction throughout the week and Close Up even provides Night Monitors to patrol the hallways of the hotel to ensure students stay in their rooms after hours.
The 2024 trip is scheduled for March 3rd through the 8th. If a student pays a $200 deposit by June 30 they can lock in 2023 pricing ($2060) plus an additional savings of $25. After June 30, and due to increased costs in airfare, hotels, etc., pricing will be going up about $90 in 2024 to $2150.
Contacts for the trip are Wayne Garner, Tim Ray, and Tab Bledsoe.

JOB SQUAD
Throughout the year, students in Mrs. Burger's class at Yocum Elementary were able to meet community members from many walks of life to learn more about their careers.
"It was a wonderfully immersive way to introduce students to different types of careers and give them a chance to meet those people directly, as well as introducing them to positive role models in our own community. Students in my monthly club met with the El Dorado Fire Department, the El Dorado Police Department, an animator from DreamWorks, and the South Arkansas College Women's Basketball Coach and team," Mrs. Burger said.
On their last trip of the year, students took a trip to South Arkansas College and visited with current college athletes, as well as learned about different career paths the athletes planned to take. The students were even given some court time with the team!

Summer Reading Challenges are active at each grade level! Check your student's Facebook page and website for more information!

ARCHERY
Students in ESD have the opportunity to participate in a nationally-ranked, award-winning archery program. BJH Coach Scot Perry said, "It's an activity open to a diverse group developing a specific skill set. Kids don't have to be athletic to participate....they don't have to run fast or throw hard. They just have to be willing to take coaching, correction, and challenges."
BJH (middle school) and WMS (elementary) both placed 10th in the nation in their respective divisions! Team members take pride in their team, and ESD is proud of how their hard work!

The AR Summer Reading Lab is happening at Retta Brown this year! All students entering grades 1st-6th--don't miss your chance to bank those AR points!

Arkansas Girls State was held May 28-June 2nd. Representing El Dorado High School at Arkansas Girls State were Matilyn Nash, Demyah Charles, Emmalou Parker, and Charli Parker.
Arkansas Girls State is a program of education sponsored by the ALA Department of Arkansas since 1942. It has provided training for over 55,000 Arkansas young women in the fundamental aspects of citizenship and practical government for the past 79 years. The ALA Girls State program in Arkansas is designed to provide citizenship training for young women of high school age; afford them an opportunity to live together in fictional cities and counties as self-governing citizens; inform them about the duties, privileges, and participation in the functioning of their government; and help them grasp the meaning of some of the responsibilities which they must assume when they become adults. The delegates elect their own officials, organize their own legislature, and have official visits with their real-life counterparts in the Capitol. Two delegates were selected to attend American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. as Arkansas Senators where a mock government experience is planned on the national level.
