Raising awareness for suicide prevention doesn't have to be a one time thing. By sharing stories, talking about the warning signs, and having open, honest conversations, we can break down the barriers associated with suicide and mental health. Today kicks off our first Wellness Wednesday. Each week, we will share information about mental, emotional, and physical well-being. In keeping with Suicide Prevention Week, this week’s Wellness Wednesday comes from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. For more information, visit https://www.nami.org/About-Mental-Illness/Common-with-Mental-Illness/Risk-of-Suicide: According to the CDC and NIMH, nearly 46,000 lives were lost to suicide in 2020 alone. Comments or thoughts about suicide, also known as suicidal ideation, can begin small — for example, “I wish I wasn’t here” or “Nothing matters.” But over time, they can become more explicit and dangerous. Here are a few other warning signs of suicide: • Increased alcohol and drug use • Aggressive behavior • Withdrawal from friends, family, and community • Dramatic mood swings • Impulsive or reckless behavior If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Bus routes 23 and 37 will NOT run this afternoon, Friday, September 2nd. If your student rides Route 23 or Route 37, please make alternate arrangements for after-school transportation. We apologize for this inconvenience. Unfortunately, there is a national bus driver shortage, and our district is one among many in Arkansas and across the United States that needs bus drivers. If there are any in our community that are interested in filling this need, please visit Transportation website at https://www.eldoradopublicschools.org/page/transportation.

#COLLEGEWEDNESDAY Allison Applegate, a Washington Middle School teacher, attended Arkansas Tech University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science. Currently, Mrs. Applegate teaches 5th-and 6th-grade special education literacy. “Arkansas Tech really made me feel like family,” which made it an easy choice for Mrs. Applegate, who has strong ties to family. Not only did ATU feel like a family, but Mrs. Applegate felt like her professors treated her as such. “Even to this day, my professors check in with me,” she said. Aside from her personal and emotional growth at Arkansas Tech, she said that her program “prepared me for my teaching career and opened new doors for my career path.” Thank you, Mrs. Applegate, for sharing about Arkansas Tech! *COLLEGE WEDNESDAYS ARE BACK!!* Katy Gorden, a CTE teacher at El Dorado High School, graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She currently teaches career readiness, coaches freshmen cheer, and assists with varsity cheer. Coach G. decided to attend UCA for a few reasons. While in high school, she traveled to Conway to cheer competitively and was familiar with the town. She had many friends attending there or already living in the area, and she would still be within reasonable driving distance from her family. With all her connections, Conway just felt like home. One thing that made her UCA experience special was the opportunity to teach at a variety of schools during her time with the teacher’s college. “I loved getting to go to many different elementary and middle schools around central Arkansas and interacting/teaching the students. I was able to experience interning at four schools between Conway and Little Rock before graduating. It made becoming a teacher more realistic.” Thank you, Coach G., for sharing about UCA! If you are interested in learning more about the University of Central Arkansas, visit https://uca.edu/.
