ESD has had several reports of black ice on bridges this morning. Please be careful while traveling to work and school today!

Shake off the dreary weather and join the cast of Freaky Friday for opening night! The show begins at 7pm!

Pending weather conditions, the El Dorado School District will start two hours late tomorrow, February 2, 2023. All ESD schools will begin at 10am. Buses will run their regular routes, and students may be dropped off beginning at 9:30am.
If weather conditions change or become more severe, further guidance will be provided.

El Dorado School District is closely monitoring the weather and weather forecast as it relates to student safety. A decision will be made at a later time if the closure is extended into tomorrow.
We canceled school today, and then, not much happened. The experts predicted inclement weather, and we were left with the decision. Do we play the “wait-til-it-happens-and-cancel” game? The one where parents scramble to find childcare with only a few hours notice, and teachers try to readjust lessons since they didn’t have a chance to send home assignments the day before. What if we wait until it’s absolutely necessary, say after bus routes have started running or morning drop off has started? Then the roads are full of school buses and teenage drivers making their way home in increasingly unsafe driving conditions.
Our other option is to we play it safe, trust the forecast, plan for an AMI Day*, and cancel early, knowing very well it could miss us.
You know what they say about hindsight; well, in South Arkansas, you might as well throw it out the window when discussing the weather. Our weather is only predictable in that it’ll be winter one day and summer the next. So when the decision to close school is in front of us, we do our best with the information we have.
As our superintendent said, “I’d rather apologize everyday for canceling school when it wasn’t needed than to not cancel and apologize for someone being in a fatal accident.”
*For more information about AMI, please visit our website here: https://www.eldoradopublicschools.org/page/ami-day-information

Due to an unfortunate scheduling conflict, the Cardiac Screening for student-athletes grades 9-12 scheduled for February 13-16 has been canceled. We will notify guardians and athletes of a reschedule date if and when possible.

Due to the high probability of inclement weather and the winter weather advisory in place for Union County, the El Dorado School District will use an AMI (Alternate Method of Instruction) Day for Wednesday, February 1st. Please follow the AMI guidance provided by your school. All campuses will be closed. All extracurricular activities scheduled for tomorrow are canceled and will be rescheduled if and when possible. Further announcements will be made if the closure is extended.

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, all after-school athletic practices are canceled today.

This afternoon, members of the El Dorado School District School Board and administration gathered to celebrate and “Flip the Switch” on the District’s newly constructed 1.75 MW-AC solar array. The project will offset 88% of the District’s energy usage and expenses, saving ESD over $128,000 annually in energy costs.
ESD entered into a Solar Services Agreement (SSA) with Entegrity, an energy efficiency and solar company headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas. With an SSA, the District creates savings by purchasing renewable energy from Entegrity at a fixed price lower than their current electricity rate.
Jim Tucker, Superintendent of El Dorado School District, stated, “We are extremely excited to see this project come to life. Thanks to the School Board’s support, this project will bring our schools significant cost savings over its lifetime and allow us to divert funds to support our students and their learning environment.”
The solar energy produced by the new array will also make an environmental impact with carbon reductions equivalent to saving 310,602 gallons of gasoline or powering 348 homes for a year. ESD students will gain firsthand experience with the rapidly growing renewable energy industry, learning how solar energy positively impacts their everyday lives.

Mandy Kingery, teacher at Northwest Elementary, graduated from Hannibal-LaGrange University with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She currently teaches kindergarten.
What drew her to HLGU was the small teacher-to-student class ratio. As a bonus, “it was a Christian college with such a happy and calm atmosphere! It felt just right!” Although it was 12 hours away from her family, Mrs. Kingery felt at home. “I loved my teachers; they made learning fun!...It was very important to me to have teacher that I knew I could count on to not only teach me, but I felt loved by them as well.”
The best part of her HLGU experience? She met her husband there! Fun fact: Mr. Kingery also teaches in the district!
Thank you, Mrs. Kingery, for sharing about HLGU! If you are interested in learning more about the Hannibal-LaGrange University, visit https://www.hlg.edu/.
