Ms. Ubias (Chemistry) and Mrs. Newman (Food Safety and Nutrition) combined knowledge and skills to bring chemistry to life through cooking. Surrounded by the smell of baking chocolate, Ms. Ubias calculated the chemical equation that makes a chocolate chip cookie. This illustrated stoichiometry for her students, one of the most difficult lessons in chemistry. Through practical application, Ms. Ubias made a chemical equation come to life. This made chemistry more palatable through an easy to understand real life application.
Mrs. Newman’s students also used the chemistry lesson as an opportunity to do a real-time health and safety inspection of the kitchens. The students identified potential kitchen hazards and came up with solutions to address each problem.
Great collaboration!!
