South Arkansas Community College is hosted its first annual "Show and Tech Competition" in March. The competition was open to all Union County students currently in 5th – 12th grades. This year’s competition was a programming challenge to create an application program (App). Participants could use the language and platform of their choice.
Mrs. Phillips' El Dorado High School Computer Science Essentials class took top prizes in the High School Division in the team and individual events. Congrats to the team winners: Caleb Baker, Ben Oswalt, and Joe Sharp who took first place with their gaming APP. In the individual event, EHS students took 1st and 2nd place: Mekaila Hunt with first place and Dominique Williams with second place. Both students developed a gaming app.
Today, representatives from SouthArk presented students with their awards. Academic Advisor Catherine Harrell and Professor and Computer Information Systems Vicki Badgley visited with students about the programs offered at SouthArk and awarded winning students with a medal, Sonic gift card, tshirt, and SouthArk swag bag.
EHS is proud of our students and Mrs. Phillips as they work to develop their computer science skills. Awesome job, Cats!

DECA Recognizes Outstanding School-based Enterprises
The School-Based Enterprise-The Wildcat Café at El Dorado High School was among School-Based Enterprises in the United States achieving Gold Level Re-Certification this year and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida. There were a total of 520 SBE Chapters to achieve Gold, Silver, or Bronze. The number of SBE’s achieving Gold were 483, 7 Silver and 12 Bronze. El Dorado High School SBE (Wildcat Café) under the guidance and leadership of their advisor, Mrs. Jackie Phillips, are one of only 4 SBE’s in the state of Arkansas that achieved this high level of achievement. The School-Based Enterprise at El Dorado High School has operated for 6 years and is to be commended for this achievement.
A school-based enterprise (SBE) is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods and services to meet the needs of the market. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in Marketing, Finance, Hospitality and Management. Marketing educators and DECA advisors have utilized this effective educational tool for over four decades to provide their students with realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction, enhance 21st century skill development, and prepare students for college and careers.
DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification Program was developed to provide recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and to motivate SBEs to strive for excellence and growth. SBEs can be certified at three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold. In order to apply for the certification, SBEs must submit extensive documentation that demonstrates their adherence to various marketing and retail standards. After the documentation is submitted, a review committee evaluates the documentation to determine which level of certification has been achieved.
DECA Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit student organization with more than 220,000 members in all 50 United States, the District of Columbia, Canada, China, Germany, Guam, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. DECA’s activities assist in the development of academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, experienced leaders.
Complete information about DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification Program can be found at www.deca.org/sbe.
